On a recent slushy afternoon in West Chelsea, I had been invited for a private tour of the future site of Sleep No More, a new immersive production that is currently being installed in advance of a March opening. This is the New York debut of Punchdrunk, a successful British theatre company, whose production is being mounted in collaboration with EMURSIVE).
Sleep No More tells the story of Macbeth as re-imagined in a 1930s hotel that’s haunted by witches. However, the story is told in an entirely unique and utterly fascinating manner. Even though actors represent distinct characters (i.e. the witches, Macbeth, Macduff, Duncan, etc.), the entire evening features no dialogue, and it’s not your traditional sit-in-the-audience play. This is theatre to the next level, as described by Randy Weiner, one of the lead producers: “the actors are doing their thing…we’re just immersed in it.” Instead, you explore a huge house with 90 rooms, spanning 100,000 square feet. The hour I spent looking around throughout a guided tour by Weiner only covered a small fraction of the floors and their contents. Even more impressive is the incredible attention to detail covered in the design: envelopes open up to reveal carefully crafted letters, upon opening dressers, we find codes or passages of quoted text from the play, closets open up and showcase false walls containing hidden pathways, and that’s just scraping the surface.Īudiences are split up, required to wear a mask a la commedia dell’arte, and forbidden from speaking. Everyone chooses his or her own path: some decide to follow a certain character in the hopes of tracking a storyline from point A-Z throughout the evening, while others explore rooms or floors (including incredibly intricate streets, shops, offices, bedrooms, ballrooms, and other mysterious locations). For example, cast members may play card games with audience members, only to be interrupted by action based on a scene from Macbeth.Īs audiences are exploring a haunted and mysterious hotel, the layout is dark, smoky, and forms a wonderfully disorienting labyrinth, accompanied by just the right amount of salt to keep evil away.Īt certain points, cast members may pull individual audience members into back rooms for intense individual “one-on-one experiences.” Other audience members may find themselves stuck in the middle of a scene, set in rooms that were previously empty, and explored by audience members standalone at other points in the evening. It’s impossible for any two people to have the same encounters at Sleep No More, and discussing experiences at the venue’s bar post-performance in the hopes of piecing together the puzzle and solving the mystery is as much a part of the show as the show itself.
